Would it surprise you one bit if I told you that this past winter I spent the better part of it hibernating and listening to music nonstop when the opportunity presented itself. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again “Music makes me happy!”
I’m sure I’m not the only one who fixates on a song and listens on a constant repeat? It seems pretty normal to some degree to have songs that actually make you feel good that you listen to on constant auto-repeat until the song suddenly deletes itself off your phone!!

If there’s a song you’d think I’d like send it my way, I’d love to hear it!
Throwback Jams is exactly what it means. A particular song that is a sudden reminder of the past, whether good or bad. Growing up in a household in which music was a main focal point, I have plenty of throwback jams. Sometimes, I even find myself wondering how I was able to listen to such songs because now that I’m older and understanding the mean of certain songs like “Freak Like Me”…….
Anytime I walk past a record store that sells vinyls, I have to stop in, even though I don’t play them, I find them really cool to have on hand. A habit that my mother started, she has some pretty rare records like “The Purple Album” from Prince and many more.
Recently, I stopped into Planet Retro Records in St. Petersburg, and found a bunch of neat finds. I even picked up some Barbra and Judy for a friend of mine in NYC who is über obsessed. Brand new condition, kind of scary how well-preserved these albums are.
What are some of your favorite throwback songs? Below is a list of my favorites:
“L.A. Love(La La)” is her first solo single in eight years since the release of her solo album The Dutchess. The DJ Mustard produced beat and the chorus are definitely the perfect blend to have you addicted. The city chanting should have really stayed to just L.A. but she did create a classic song. A lot of popular songs chant cities and have a “la la” in their hook!
Personally, I love the song. I really dig the West Coast beat production sound. From L.A. to the Bay the sound of the different DJ’s is so different. It’s really unique. DJ Mustard knows how to produce a track!
Nicki Minaj…..you either love her or you hate her. I like her mix tape stuff when she was “Beam Me Up Scotty” or “Sticks In My Bun” and that was on the days of IMEEM!
Even though I knew she was releasing an album, I had to scratch my head and say “With what relevance?”“Pills N Potion” it’s an okay song, I get it. For some reason, I got excited for “Anaconda”
If you are a fan of the 90’s booty shaking Sir MixALot’s “Baby Got Back”, you’ll love Anaconda. Playing one of her many characters, this song is sure to TURN UP parties and clubs everywhere! Can’t wait to see the video and the “Twerk” she came up with for the video.
Beyicki?Neyonce? Whatever the hell you want to call these two, just make sure you stay on their team! Everyone is all like she’s addressing the “Elevator Scandal” and let’s be real…..she really didn’t. This song just throws all kind of shade while making sure that everything you do is FLAWLESS! There’s another remix version of this track, Lil Kim recorded a version where she added her vocals in……I mean I could understand Foxy Brown over Lil Kim but that’s none of my business.
Azealia Banks aka Hip Hop’s Bratty Little Sister has finally dropped her new single “Heavy Metal and Reflective.” Which means she could be one step closer to actually dropping her début album “Broke With Expensive Taste” which has continuously been put on the backburners since 2012.
If you haven’t heard the début single “2 On” by Tinashe, you are definitely missing out! The video is just as good definitely showcasing her style influences i.e. Beyonce and Janet Jackson. DJ Mustard produced featuring Schoolboy Q, Tinashe’s début single is definitely bringing strong West Coast sound. Turn Up!
It doesn’t really take a lot to impress me musically. Well, actually it does. I have particulars for my music and I expect those expectations to be met. Good beat. Good melody. Good lyrics. Honestly, if you don’t like it, probably will appeal to me much more. I like what others don’t like it.
That being said, I’m currently in love with a lot of different things. ESPECIALLY that song in the Target commercial by HAIM.
Currently Being Overplayed:
Forever – HAIM
Fancy – Iggy Azalea feat. Charlie XCX
Come A Little Closer – Cage the Elephant
Charlie Brown – Coldplay
#Selfie – The Chainsmokers
2 On – Tinash feat. Schoolboy Q
Help Me Lose My Mind(Paul Woolford Remix) – Disclosure
Ever realize how much music correlates to our mood? Music breaks down the barriers of language and everyone can enjoy. Music makes us feel good. It tells a story, it sets our mood, it inspires us and so much more. As you know, not a day goes by when I am not listening to music. I'M LITERALLY OBSESSED WITH MUSIC. I also have a bad habit of listening to music on a first glance and disliking the song but then hearing again to find that I only like the song or artist.
Coincidentally, I was at the barbershop(a place that i truly loathe) however this visit wasn’t as bad, the person cutting my hair actually happened to be a “DJ” and on his tape actually put a song that I am now obsessed with. So here’s a list of songs that I am now obsessed with.
Childish Gambino “3005” The song from the barbershop playlist
Jazmin Sisters “You” sampling SWV’s classic “Weak” Very good too! My mother liked this too which says a lot
